A Federal High Court in Abuja has denied bail to Chief Rochas Okorocha, the former governor of Imo State and Senator representing Imo West, pending the outcome of a suit he filed against the Federal Government.

The judge, Justice Inyang Ekwo refused to order the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, to release him on bail.

Chief Okorocha had submitted an ex-parte application, claiming that he is a presidential candidate on the platform of the All Progressive Congress, APC, and that his political ambitions would be threatened if he was not given bail.

In a quick judgement on the bail plea, Justice Ekwo stated that he was not inclined to allow him to bail, Instead, the Judge instructed Chief Okorocha to issue a notice to the Federal Government to come and defend the Senator’s incarceration.

Chief Okorocha was scheduled to be arraigned twice before the same Judge on a N2.9 billion money laundering accusations, but he refused to appear in court both times.

The Supreme Court has set aside the restriction imposed by the Lagos State Government on the use of the hijab by female Muslim students in its public primary and secondary schools.

In a separate decision of five-to-two by a seven-man panel of Justices, the Apex court affirmed the earlier decision of the Lagos Division of the Court of Appeal, which nullified a High Court judgement that banned female students from wearing Hijab with their school uniforms.

The court, in its lead majority verdict by Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun and read by Justice Tijani Abubakar, dismissed as lacking in merit an appeal filed by the Lagos state government against the decision of the Court of Appeal.

The Supreme Court said it would not reinstate the October 17, 2014, judgement by Justice Grace Onyeabo of the High Court of Lagos State, which upheld the ban on Hijab.
