On Sport; Antonio Conte insists he remains committed to Spurs after casting doubt

Tottenham: Antonio Conte insists he remains committed to Spurs after casting doubt.

Antonio Conte insisted he is committed to Tottenham and ‘in the same boat’ as the club’s hierarchy but stopped short of guaranteeing he will not leave before the end of the season.

When asked the question directly after casting doubt over his future following Spurs’s midweek defeat at Burnley, their fourth loss in five league games, Conte said: ‘In this moment I guarantee the best commitment that I can give to this club.

‘I have another year of contract with this club but you know very well that football is very strange. You can have three, four years of contract and the club can sack you.

‘The most important thing is that I am enjoying my time with this club. I think that we are working very well.

‘Now it is very difficult to answer this question. But for sure, I am working to improve the club in every aspect.’

Spurs head coach Conte later added: ‘Me and the club we stay in the same boat. Until the last day I stay here, I will help the club to improve.

The Italian’s emotional outbursts this season have not gone down well with some players due to their confidence-denting negativity.

Meanwhile his criticisms of the club’s January business and recent recruitment ruffled feathers among the hierarchy though he was at pains to stress ‘I have a good relationship with the club, especially with Daniel [chairman Daniel Levy].’

And Conte, who revealed he has held talks with Levy since airing his views once again post-match at Turf Moor, rejected the notion that his brutal truths could have an unsettling effect on the club.

‘Why? Because I tell the truth? If you tell the truth, you destabilise?’ he asked.

‘In my opinion and in my education … my family said to me … with the truth, you grow, with a lie you destabilise people.

‘If I destabilise someone, [they are] not good man, not good club. I want a strong club, strong men, strong players. The truth is the only way that I know to grow.’

And as he discussed how much he struggles with losing and also how much more work there is to do at Spurs than he was expecting it became clear we have not heard the last of straight-talking Conte.

He said: ‘When you lose a game, I’m not the person to have dinner with. You understand? I’m not the right person.

When I lose a game my mood is very bad, I prefer to stay alone. I prefer to leave the defeat, stay alone and metabolise the defeat. For sure I need one day to recover – at least.

‘If you ask me what I hate in life, it’s to lose games. Maybe in this club, not many are used to having this type of person. But I am this type of person. There are many coaches that don’t suffer.

‘Sometimes I envy this person because I wanted to be a little soft but at the same time to be this way makes me a person that in his career I won before as a player and then as a coach.

‘For sure, when I lose, if you expect that I am happy or to come to a press conference and laugh, I am not this person.

‘I am sorry if I show my disappointment because maybe it would be good to keep this inside and not show my emotion.

‘I am an honest person, it is difficult for me to lie or hide the truth and for this reason sometimes after a loss my mood is not top. Sorry for this but I am this.

‘Maybe in my heart, mind and head I thought to find a situation not better but more ready to fight and to win. And instead now I found a situation where we have to work, to work a lot, much more than was my expectation to do.

‘But I am not scared about the work as I repeat in my life only through work have I reached important level in my career. When I arrived here I do not ask anything. But at the same time I know that if I arrive here and they know that you are taking an important coach, not a medium coach.
